Pallet footprint
Also called: pallet size, pallet dimensions, L x W

A pallet footprint is its length x width in plan view, with the length (the direction of the stringers or stringerboards) stated first. The 48x40 in (1219 x 1016 mm) footprint is the most common in North America, and 1200x800 mm (EUR) in Europe; ISO 6780 lists six standard footprints.
Length first
By convention the first number is the stringer length and the second is the deckboard length. A 48x40 has 48 in stringers and 40 in deckboards; a 40x48 is the same area turned 90 degrees, with different entry and racking behavior.

ISO 6780 lists 1200x800, 1200x1000, 1219x1016, 1165x1165, 1067x1067 and 1100x1100 mm. ANSI MH1 covers the North American sizes.
Why footprint matters
Footprint must match the product (to avoid load overhang), the trailer or container, the racks and any retailer or pool program. See choosing a pallet size and overall height.
Questions
- Is a 48x40 pallet the same as a 40x48?
- Same area, different orientation. In 48x40 the stringers run the 48 in side; in 40x48 they run the 40 in side, which changes fork entry and racking.
