Pallet lumber moisture content
Reviewed
Moisture content (MC) is the weight of water in wood as a percentage of its dry weight. Pallets are built either green or kiln dried, commonly to 19% (KD19). Drying cuts weight (a GMA-style mixed hardwood pallet drops from about 59 lb green to about 39 lb at KD19) and shrinks parts about 1% for every 5% of moisture lost below about 28%.

What moisture content means for a pallet
Moisture content is the weight of water in wood divided by the weight of the dry wood. Freshly sawn green lumber can hold a lot of water; hardwood cants can be well above 50%. Kiln-dried lumber has been dried to a target, most often 19%.
Moisture affects almost everything a buyer cares about:
- Weight, and so freight cost.
- Shrinkage, which loosens nails and changes dimensions.
- Mold in warm or sealed environments.
- Strength: wood gets stronger and stiffer as it dries.
- Nail holding, especially for smooth nails.
The Uniform Standard does not set an MC limit
The Uniform Standard for Wood Pallets does not limit moisture content. It refers to ASTM D4442 and D7438 for measuring it. Limits come from buyers:
| Buyer or scheme | Requirement as documented |
|---|---|
| Costco | Below 19% for containerized shipments |
| EPAL | Dry wood, to reduce mold risk |
See Costco pallet requirements and EPAL.
How PDS handles moisture
A PDS analysis asks for the moisture content at manufacture and assembly (for example "Green"), plus a service environment:
| Service environment | Equilibrium moisture content |
|---|---|
| Dry | 19% or less |
| Wet | Over 19% |
It can also record a post-assembly conditioning treatment, such as "Kiln Dried, 19% EMC". The physical property report then gives pallet weight at manufacture and at 25%, 19%, 15% and 12% MC, and the shrinkage of each part as it dries.
Weight: green vs dry
palletdesign.ai's weight factors, in lb per board foot including nails:
| Species | Green | KD19 | GMA-style 48 x 40, green / KD19 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed hardwood | 4.37 | 2.91 | 59 / 39 lb |
| Oak | 5.25 | 3.90 | 71 / 53 lb |
| Southern yellow pine | 4.45 | 3.40 | 60 / 46 lb |
| SPF | 3.24 | 2.30 | 44 / 31 lb |
| Douglas fir | 3.90 | 3.00 | 53 / 40 lb |
A published PDS sheet for the same mixed hardwood design gives 59 lb at manufacture and 37 lb at 12% MC. See pallet weight.
Shrinkage
Below the fiber saturation point (about 28% MC), wood shrinks roughly 1% in dimension for each 5% of moisture it loses. A published PDS example shows the scale:
| Part | Shrinkage from green to 19% MC |
|---|---|
| 5/8 in deckboard thickness | 0.014 in (±0.004) |
| 5-1/2 in board width | 0.123 in |
That shrinkage is why a pallet built green and used dry can develop loose joints and wider gaps.
Moisture and nails
The Uniform Standard's connection equations include a moisture factor. For smooth (plain shank) nails driven into green wood that then dries in service (or the reverse), withdrawal strength is multiplied by 0.25, a 75% reduction. Threaded nails are not penalized for withdrawal. Lateral strength also drops (factor 0.7) when the pallet is built green or used wet. That is a strong argument for threaded nails on pallets built green. See pallet nails.
Measuring moisture
The Uniform Standard refers to two ASTM methods: D4442, the direct oven-dry method, and D7438, for calibrating and using moisture meters. In practice, receiving docks use a handheld meter and spot-check boards from several pallets. If you set a limit, say on the RFQ how it will be checked: which parts, how many pallets, and what reading fails the shipment.
Choosing green or kiln dried
| Choose | When |
|---|---|
| Green | Domestic, short-cycle, cost-driven shipments with no moisture requirement |
| Kiln dried (KD19) | Containerized or long-transit loads, food and pharmaceutical, buyers with MC limits, weight-sensitive freight |
Kiln drying is not the same as ISPM 15 heat treatment. See kiln-dried vs heat-treated.
How palletdesign.ai uses moisture
palletdesign.ai has two moisture settings: green and KD19. The setting changes the weight estimate (the factors above) and the indicative cost: KD19 multiplies the lumber cost by 1.15 in the engine's default assumptions. It does not change the geometry, nail count or the indicative capacity check.
Questions
- What moisture content should pallet lumber be?
- There is no Uniform Standard limit. Pallets are built green or kiln dried, commonly to 19%. Buyers such as Costco require below 19% for containerized shipments.
- How much weight does kiln drying save on a pallet?
- For a GMA-style 48 x 40 in mixed hardwood pallet, about 20 lb: roughly 59 lb green versus 39 lb at 19% moisture, by palletdesign.ai's factors.
- Does wet lumber weaken pallet nails?
- Yes for smooth nails. The Uniform Standard cuts smooth-nail withdrawal strength to 25% when wood is nailed green and used dry, or the reverse. Threaded nails avoid that penalty.
