Pallets for retail distribution

Retail distribution centers are built around the 48 x 40 in (1219 x 1016 mm) pallet, in GMA-style stringer or pooled block construction. Large retailers publish pallet rules: Costco requires pooled block pallets, and The Home Depot requires a PDS analysis or ASTM D1185 test with at least 2,800 lb capacity.

Some retailers' display programs use half (48 x 20 in) and quarter (24 x 20 in) footprints with limits on unit height; confirm dimensions with the retailer's display guide.
Construction and spec notes
Stringer or block?
- A GMA pallet is a stringer pallet with 3 notched stringers, 7 top and 5 bottom deckboards, and is 4.75 in tall. Forklifts enter from all four sides, pallet jacks only from the ends.
- A block pallet takes pallet jacks from all four sides and is the standard construction for pooled pallets.
Stores and cross-docks often move pallets with jacks, and a block pallet can be picked up from any side.
Racking and stacking
Distribution centers rack incoming loads and trailers are often double-stacked. Retailer rules may express capacity as a load in a named support condition (Home Depot uses stacked 3 high). State the support condition next to every capacity number: the same pallet can have a racked rating a fraction of its floor-stacked rating. palletdesign.ai gives an indicative beam check; the certified numbers retailers ask for come from a PDS analysis or a test to ASTM D1185.
Lumber, moisture and fasteners
Specify species, grade, moisture content and nail spec. Low-density species are excluded by some retailers (see below). Pallets for containerized or cross-border shipments need moisture and heat-treatment specs.
One-way, pooled or recycled
Vendors shipping into retail choose between buying one-way pallets, renting pooled pallets, or buying recycled pallets. The retailer's rules often decide it. See reusable vs single-use pallets.

Costco
- Requires pooled block pallets; purpose-built pallets only by exception
- Exceptions need a PDS report with racking capacity and a user-specified deflection limit with its matching maximum load; approval lasts one year
- Requires machine-built pallets
- Moisture content below 19% for containerized shipments
- ISPM 15 marks on both long sides; heat treatment is required for pallets crossing from Mexico to the US but not from Canada

The Home Depot
