Southern yellow pine (SYP) pallet lumber

What SYP is

Southern yellow pine is a trade group of pines grown across the US South. The Uniform Standard classes it as species class 22 (SYP), covering loblolly, longleaf, shortleaf and slash pine. Although it is a softwood, it sits in the Uniform Standard's medium/high-density sort group alongside the hardwoods and Douglas fir, not with the low-density softwoods.

SYP is widely sawn as dimension lumber, so SYP pallets often use standard softwood sizes: a 2x4 stringer is 1-1/2 x 3-1/2 in actual, and 1x4 and 1x6 boards are 3/4 x 3-1/2 and 3/4 x 5-1/2 in. See nominal vs actual lumber.

Key properties

The price per MBF is palletdesign.ai's default cost assumption for green, standard-grade stock, not a market quote. The bending stress is the conservative allowable value palletdesign.ai uses for indicative checks, not a design value from a grading agency.

What SYP does to a pallet

For a GMA-style 48 x 40 stringer pallet (13.5 board feet, same dimensions in every species):

SYP's allowable bending stress is about 18% higher than mixed hardwood's, so the same design checks about 18% stronger in palletdesign.ai's indicative beam check, a conservative screen rather than a rating. In practice SYP pallets often use 1-1/2 in wide stringers rather than 1-3/8 in, which raises capacity further. Confirm any capacity with a PDS analysis or ASTM D1185 test.

Typical uses

• Southern and Southeastern pallet markets where SYP is the local species.
• Racked pallets and heavier loads, thanks to its high bending strength.
• Pallets built from dimension lumber (2x4 stringers, 1x6 deckboards).
• Kiln-dried pallets. SYP is commonly available kiln dried to 19% (often labeled KD19), which suits food, pharmaceutical and export shippers who want dry, lighter pallets.

Moisture

Green SYP is heavy, and green pallets of any species can mold in warm, humid storage or sealed containers. Kiln drying cuts the engine's weight factor from 4.45 to 3.4 lb per board foot, about 14 lb less on the GMA-style pallet. Nails for SYP

The nail guidance we rely on recommends annularly threaded (ring shank) nails for most softwoods and helically threaded nails for medium- and high-density hardwoods. SYP is a softwood but sits in the medium/high-density sort group, so confirm the choice with your fastener supplier and check the nail quality specs.
