Oak pallet lumber
Reviewed
Oak (red and white oak, Uniform Standard species class 21) is one of the densest common pallet woods. palletdesign.ai assumes about 5.25 lb per board foot green and 3.9 lb kiln dried, including nails, and an allowable bending stress of 1,200 psi, so it suits heavy and racked loads at the cost of extra weight.

Oak as pallet lumber
Oak is a common choice for heavy-duty pallets in the eastern US. The Uniform Standard groups red oak and white oak as species class 21, Eastern oaks, in its medium/high-density sort group. Oak often appears as the lead share of a hardwood mix, for example "Oak / high-density / medium-density hardwoods" on published PDS sheets, and sometimes as the only species when a buyer wants maximum strength.
Key properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Species class | 21 (Eastern oaks: red oak, white oak) |
| Sort group | Medium/high density, hardwood |
| Density (reference table) | red oak about 63 lb/cu ft green, about 44 lb/cu ft kiln dried |
| Engine weight factor, incl. nails | 5.25 lb/bd ft green, 3.9 lb/bd ft KD19 |
| Engine allowable bending stress | 1,200 psi |
| Engine price assumption | $850 per MBF (green, standard grade) |
The price per MBF is palletdesign.ai's default cost assumption for green, standard-grade stock, not a market quote. The bending stress is the conservative allowable value palletdesign.ai uses for indicative checks, not a design value from a grading agency.
One cubic foot is 12 board feet, so 63 lb/cu ft green is about 5.25 lb per board foot, which matches the engine's green factor.
What oak does to a pallet
For the same GMA-style 48 x 40 stringer pallet (13.5 board feet):
| Mixed hardwood | Oak | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight, green | about 59 lb | about 71 lb |
| Weight, KD19 | about 39 lb | about 53 lb |
| Lumber cost at engine default | about $9.45 | about $11.47 |
Oak's allowable bending stress is about 9% higher than mixed hardwood's, so the same design checks about 9% stronger in palletdesign.ai's indicative beam check. That check is a conservative screen, not a rating. Confirm any capacity with a PDS analysis or an ASTM D1185 test.
Oak adds roughly 12 lb per pallet green over mixed hardwood on this design. That matters for freight and for manual handling. Before switching the whole pallet to oak, compare the option of deepening or adding a stringer; the pallet load capacity guide explains why stringer size dominates rack capacity.
Typical uses
- Heavy industrial loads: machinery, metal parts, building materials.
- Pallets that will be racked with little margin.
- Long-life reusable pallets where nail holding and wear resistance matter.
- Skids and crate bases on heavy runners. See skids.
Moisture and drying
Green oak is heavy and shrinks as it dries. The general rule is about 1% dimensional loss for each 5% drop in moisture below fiber saturation (about 28%). If the pallet goes into a sealed container or to a buyer with a moisture limit, specify kiln drying. See moisture content.
Nails for oak
Helically threaded nails are recommended for medium- and high-density hardwoods, which includes oak. Dense wood can split at the nail line, so keep nails at the specified distances from board ends and edges. See pallet nails.
Specifying oak
Write oak as a species class so every mill reads it the same way:
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Lumber mix | Species class 21 (Eastern oaks), Standard &BTR, 100% |
| Or, as part of a mix | Class 21 50%, class 1 25%, class 3 25%, Standard &BTR |
| Moisture at manufacture | Green, or KD 19% |
| Fasteners | Helically threaded, length and wire diameter stated |
If only some parts need oak, say which: oak stringers with mixed hardwood deckboards is a common way to put the strength where the rack load is.
How palletdesign.ai uses oak
Choose oak in the lumber settings or ask for it in the request. When the indicative rack check on a stringer pallet runs over its limit, the designer can move the pallet to oak for bending strength, alongside options like adding or deepening stringers. The weight, cost and indicative capacity update from the parts list.
Questions
- Are oak pallets stronger than other wood pallets?
- Oak is denser and stronger than most pallet woods. palletdesign.ai assumes 1,200 psi allowable bending stress for oak, against 1,100 psi for mixed hardwood and 850 psi for SPF. Southern yellow pine is assumed slightly higher at 1,300 psi.
- How much does an oak pallet weigh?
- A GMA-style 48 x 40 in oak pallet weighs about 71 lb built green and about 53 lb kiln dried, by palletdesign.ai's weight factors.
- What species class is oak in the Uniform Standard?
- Class 21, Eastern oaks, which covers red oak and white oak. It is in the medium/high-density sort group.
